SITRA, an acronym for South India Textile Research Association is the leading textile research associations in India and has completed a more than 58 years in textile service. It has achieved rapid progress in the realisation of the broad objective it set forth during its establishment in 1956. SITRA is governed by a council of administration consisting of member representatives of the industry, Government and Scientists and is sponsored by the Industry and partly supported by the ministry of Textiles, Govt.of India. Sprawling in a campus of about 13.14 hectares, SITRA is situated at Coimbatore in Tamilnadu and is within easy access of a large number of textile mills. The modern and architecturally designed buildings with a floor space of about 15000 sq.m house well equipped air conditioned testing, electronics and calibration laboratories,pilot mills, computer and CAD centres, workshop, jute mill, Library, Training centres, auditorium as well as offices of the different divisions. SITRA has a full range of sophisticated textile testing instruments and modern machines and is one of the best equipped textile research organisations in the world. SITRA, a link in the chain of textile laboratories in the country, has emerged as an important centre for International training to candidates from third world countries. Sixty third batches of the programme have been conducted since its initiation in 1974 and around 1650 participants from developing countries have so far benefitted out of SITRA&'s expertise in textile technology under various courses conducted over the last 40 years
