The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Roorkee is the successor of the University of Roorkee and is the oldest technical institution of the Indian sub-continent. It was established as the Roorkee College in 1847. Recognizing its contributions to the development of the country, it was elevated to the status of University, the first technical university in India in 1949. The University of Roorkee was later converted to IIT Roorkee in 2001. The Institute comprises of 19 Academic Departments and 5 Service Centers. There are regular undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes including doctoral programme. Presently, there are around 8,000 students including 250 foreigners hailing from as many as 39 countries. There are 475+ regular faculty members working as Professors, Associate Professors and Assistant Professors. The period of 1965 to 1974 saw the establishment of a number of International Post Graduate Courses in Hydrology under the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation’s (UNESCO’s) International Hydrology Decade launched in 1965. The training and education in Hydrology was one of the main components of this programme. The Department of Hydrology (DOH) came into existence with the inception of the International Post-Graduate Course in Hydrology in 1972. The courses offered by the Department of Hydrology are presently sponsored by the Government of India, UNESCO and WMO. So far, a total of 864 participants including 313 foreign participants from 38 countries have participated in the Post-Graduate Programme. Since 2003, GATE qualified fresh engineering and science graduates from India are also admitted in this programme.
